SUPERVISOR RICHARD VALLE
Alameda County District 2 Update

About Richard Valle

Richard Valle has served as the Alameda County Supervisor of District 2 since June 11, 2012. He has focused on collaboratively working with the community to identify solutions to long standing social and economic problems that bring suffering and harm to people. He works on improving the quality of life for everyone with a focus on education, youth development, employment and training, and delivering improved social services. Initiatives such as Science in the Park, increasing contracting opportunities for local District 2 businesses, providing support funding for non-profits, and long term fiscal stability of St. Rose Hospital, are among several capital and social justice improvement initiatives that Supervisor Valle is delivering and working on with our constituents in District 2 and Alameda County.

Supervisor Valle served as a Union City Councilmember for 13 years from 1997 to 2010. During that time, he introduced and chaired a number of significant ordinances and tax measures such as the Affordable Housing Ordinance, Measure AA for municipal services, Measure UU for Public Safety, and Measure B for New Haven Schools.

Supervisor Valle’s dedication and commitment to creating stable union jobs is evident through his years of service as the Founder and President of Tri-CED Community Recycling, California’s largest non-profit recycling company that employs at-risk youth and provides union jobs. Tri-CED staff is represented by Teamsters Union Local 70, and for over 37 years has provided employment for over 1,000 youth. In addition to its recycling collection services, Tri-CED also makes contributions to the community in the form of grants to other non-profit groups that enrich the community with education, arts, and culture.

For his innovative approach in helping at-risk youth and his dedication to his community, Supervisor Valle received the James Irvine Foundation Leadership Award and the Chabot College Gladiator Award. For his years of success in creating stable union jobs, Teamsters Union Local 70 recognized Supervisor Valle as one of the "Outstanding Employers" in the recycling and solid waste industry.

Supervisor Valle has a long-standing relationship with labor. He worked in the Alameda County Labor Movement in 1982. He was a business agent for the Hotel, Motel, Culinary Union Local 50, and was a delegate to the Alameda County and Contra Costa County Central Labor Councils. Supervisor Valle is proud to mention that he was incarcerated twice and placed on probation in Alameda County along with his past friend and activist, Father Bill O’Donnell of St. Joseph the Worker Church in Berkeley, for actions at Laurel Grove Hospital and Manzella’s Loft.

Supervisor Valle is a Vietnam Veteran. After his service with the U.S. Army as a field medic in 1970, he pursued his education and graduated from Chabot College with an Associate in Arts degree and a Bachelor in Arts degree in Sociology and a Master’s in Public Administration from California State University, Hayward (East Bay).

Supervisor Valle is a dedicated husband and father, a successful businessman, and community member who is committed to his work of social and economic justice, while preserving and respecting all living beings and nature for the benefit of future generations.
