The theme for all levels of the speech contest shall be Rotary International’s Motto, Service Above Self. The theme must be clearly identified in the speech but need not be the topic of the speech.

Student speakers from Hayward may choose any topic they feel is timely and of interest, as long as the content of the speech relates to the current year’s theme and incorporates all four principles of the Rotary Four Way Test. The speech, to be between four and five minutes long, does not need to include the principles specifically as written; however, it does need to include the values/key words (truth, fair, goodwill/friendships, beneficial) of each principle.
