The 103-year-old Hayward Rotary Club has distributed more than $1 million to local nonprofit organizations since 2000 through fund-raisers such as the concessions booths at the Rowell Ranch Rodeo every May.

The Hayward Rotary Club will meet next week on Monday, Aug. 18 to observe National Seniors Day and hear from a few of the more "experienced" members. The club meets at noon at 1974 B St. in downtown Hayward. There will also be a prize presented to the member who brings the best cane.

National Seniors Day is Aug. 21, created to raise awareness about the issues affecting older adults and appreciate their contributions to communities and the nation. It was designed to create reflections on the achievements of seniors and assure they are treated with respect and dignity. According to the 2017 census, 47 million seniors live in the United States. By 2060, that number will nearly double.

On Monday, Hayward Rotarians will hear from club members who have helped build Hayward Rotary into the largest and most philanthropic nonprofit service club in the city. Since 2000, the club has distributed more than $1 million to local nonprofit organizations and more than 50,000 third-grade students have received free books and dictionaries.
