Rotarians, students from Interact clubs, family members and other volunteers turned out Feb. 12 to sort and label books for 1,750 Hayward Unified School District third grade students. The event, at the Sprinkler Fitters Local HQ in Hayward, made sure that 6,770 books would be distributed to 19 public schools. Each student will receive three books of their choosing from the Scholastic catalog, with bonus books provided to each classroom.

Earlier, 102 dictionaries were distributed to third grade students at four Catholic schools. Project chair Tom Ferreira announced that distribution team captains can pick up the boxed books for delivery at the Sprinkler Fitters office before Feb. 21, for distribution by their teams the following week. Hayward public schools are not in session the week of Feb. 17.
